A native of Galesburg, Illinois, Bob earned a B.S. in social sciences at Illinois State University in 1957 and an M.A. in history from the University of Northern Colorado in 1961.
He taught high school in Illinois before coming to Colorado in 1959. He taught high school history in Poudre School District (PSD) from1960 to1991 and Humanities at the Larimer Campus of Front Range Community College 1992-1996.
Bob received the Phi Delta Kappa Excellence in Teaching Award in 1978 and the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Teacher Award Foundation in 1980. He was president of the Poudre Education Association (1979-80). A local school on Timberline Road, Bacon Elementary, was named in his honor in 2003.

After retirement from PSD in 1991, he was twice elected to the Board of Education of Poudre School District. He served on the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) Board of Directors and in 1999 was selected for CASB’s honorary All State School Board. While on the school board, Bob was a member of many community and state groups working for children’s and educational issues.
Bob was elected and served three terms (1997-2002) as Colorado State Representative from House District 53 (comprised of west Fort Collins and north and west Larimer County). While in the Colorado House, he served on the State Affairs, Appropriations and Civil Justice Committees and the Legislative Council. He was Assistant Minority Leader in the House in 1999-2000.
While in the Colorado House of Representatives, Bob received the Sierra Club Freshman Legislator of the Year Award, the Colorado Association of School Boards Legislative Excellence Award, and the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry’s Business Legislator of the Year Award.
Bob was elected State Senator from Senate District 14 (the city of Fort Collins) in 2004. He serves as Chair of the Local Government Committee, Vice-Chair of the Capital Development Committee, and is a member of the Education and Judiciary Committees.
In addition to serving as state senator, Bob continues to serve on the External Advisory Council of Colorado State University’s College of Applied Human Sciences, B.A.S.E. Camp (before and after school on-site child care) and Nickels and Dimes for Childcare Assistance. Previously, he served on the Fort Collins Board of Directors of OpenStage Theatre. When the legislature is not in session, Bob reads to students every week in the library of a local elementary school.
Bob’s wife, Bev, taught for many years in Poudre School District. Bob and Bev have three adult married children and five grandchildren.
